Clive Thompson on the Problem With Online Ads

At first, Maciej Ceglowski looks like any other web entrepreneur. He created a clever bookmarking service, Pinboard.in, that lets you organize links, see who else has saved them, and even cache copies of entire web pages. With 20,000 users, it’s a tiny, scrappy competitor to Delicious, a long-established site recently spun off by Yahoo that does many of the same things.

But there’s one big difference: While Delicious has always been free, Ceglowski charges people roughly $9 to join Pinboard and $25 a year if they want to make cached copies of sites.

On the surface, this seems suicidal. Why charge money when your massive competitor is free? Ceglowski has a one-word answer: advertising.

Since people pay him money, he doesn’t need to run ads to “monetize” his customers’ attention. He doesn’t have to do all the things that typically ruin the experience for people—like clogging pages with distracting banners or breaking them into smaller chunks so users have to click around a lot. “It’s like a moral hazard,” he says. “Once you’re not just charging people straight up, you get into all these murky ethical things. You have to sell their eyeballs.”

As it turns out, he’s not alone. A new generation of web entrepreneurs has discovered the joys of charging users cold, hard cash. Along with Pinboard, there’s the read-it-later service Instapaper, private social-network site Ning, and innumerable iPhone apps that require you to lay down coin.

If we’re lucky, this trend will save the Internet from one of the most corrosive forces affecting it—the bloodless logic of advertising.

For years, of course, everyone has claimed that you can’t charge for anything online. If you dream up a cool new tool, your only way to make money is to generate as many impressions as possible for advertisers. This inevitably produces horrid, cynical designs that work against what people want. Consider Facebook: Each year, it redesigns its site to gradually nudge users to make more and more of their material public. This is partly because CEO Mark Zuckerberg seems to think publicness is inherently good—but it’s also a rational response to the demands of the ad market, which needs as many people looking at as many things as possible.

In contrast, charging for your service neatly aligns your desires with those of your customers (as a bonus, you can call them customers instead of users). “There’s a magical relationship you have with people who are paying you money,” says David Heinemeier Hansson, a partner at 37signals, which runs several paid web services like Basecamp. “You worry about doing what they need and request.”

Better yet, Hansson points out, paid-for services don’t need to bloat their staffs with hordes of biz-dev weasels. Hansson’s 25-person team is almost entirely programmers and designers—people who solve problems instead of spending their days trying to get users to click on ads.

As for the argument that no one will pay for anything online? That was originally driven partly by the absence of good micropayment systems. But now there are oodles—including mainstream ones like Amazon’s. Apple’s App Store opens the door to easy monthly payments, too.

Here’s how to make some money: Start a social networking service that runs on phones. Include tight, granular privacy controls, and charge $1 a month for it. Carve out a mere 1 percent of Facebook’s user base and you’ll still be making millions a month.

I predict that in 2050, we’ll look back at the first 20 years of the web and shake our heads. The craptacular design! The hallucinogenic business models! The privacy nightmares! All because entrepreneurs convinced themselves that they couldn’t do what inventors have done for centuries: Charge people a fair price for things they want.

How To Save Money & Even Make Money Off Your Textbooks This Fall

At the beginning of August, MIT Press held a party to celebrate the sale of the 500,000th copy of the textbook Introduction to Algorithms. While the number, alone, is impressive, what makes the feat more outstanding is that it comes at a time when digital textbooks, online note taking applications and tablets have been flooding the market. With students now heading back to school, there’s a lot of debate over whether they should stick to their spiral-bound course books or swap them in for something digital. But, instead of discussing the pros and cons of traditional text, we’d rather examine the alternatives.

Try Renting

Chegg allows college students to rent and buy textbooks, both print and digital. The company has an “Any Reason” return policy. So, if you rent a book and discover weeks into class you don’t need it, you have 21 days to return it. You’ll receive a full refund, minus the cost of shipping. E-Textbooks work the same way; you can cancel at any time within 14 days. Chegg also offers homework help, and is partnered with the American Forests Program. Together, the two have helped plant over 5 million trees.

CampusBookRentals is another great company that allows for freedom and flexibility. They offer three different rental periods, ranging from 55 to 130 days, along with a 30-day guarantee. They also provide a 15-day grace period, which gives students the opportunity to rent a book early or hold on to it late. The company is partnered with Operation Smile, and has been helping heal children since the beginning of this year.

The only downside of these sites? While highlighting is not prohibited, it is asked to be limited since the books do need to rotate to other students.

In July, Amazon also launched a textbook rental store for its Kindle eBook service. You can choose any rental length between 30 and 360 days and are expected to pay only for the time you need the book. Feel free to highlight and take notes in any book you rent, because you’ll always be able to access your notes after the rental expires courtesy of Amazon.

Try Selling

Cash4Books lets you sell your used textbooks either from your computer or from your iPhone or iPod Touch. By scanning the books’ barcodes or entering their ISBNs, you can get immediate price quotes and then ship your books for free by using the company’s pre-paid labels. Payment is sent within three business days after your order’s been processed, and the site offers payment via check or PayPal.

Sell Used Books takes back a variety of books, including those you feel forced to buy for school. The company follows a Cash4Books formula in the sense that all you need to do is enter your book’s ISBN to receive your free, instant price quote. From there, you can print off  the equally-as-free shipping label and send your former book along its merry way.

Sell Back Your Book, owned by Ez Book Recycle Inc., offers another easy way for students to make a quick buck off of their used textbooks. Not only does the company buy back books, however, they also buy back graphing calculators, CDs, DVDs, video games and other electronics. The process is the same, but the site’s constantly updating their prices to ensure that their visitors are getting the best deals.

There’s no need to waste your money this fall; college is expensive enough. Save that money you were going to use on your school’s overpriced textbooks and spend it instead on more important things, like groceries, clothing, and concert tickets.

Online tutorials gain traction with educators

Here’s how Salman Khan thinks schools should work: Students should learn lessons online and do homework and projects in class.

This “flipping” of the traditional classroom is the operating system espoused by Khan and his Khan Academy (KahnAcademy.org), a website whose popularity is exploding as millions tune into its free videos, practice exercises and assessment tools.

Khan’s videos provide basic tutorials, mostly in math and science, that students can watch repeatedly in class or at home and pause if they need to – something that can’t happen with a classroom lecture. Teachers are then free to work individually with students and be more creative.

And that, Khan says, enables class time to be “an optimal experience for students and teachers.”

Recently hailed as revolutionary by Bill Gates, Google and some in the media, the concept is gaining traction among educators. Teachers view the site as a useful tool to individualize learning, says Dennis Van Roekel, who taught for 23 years and now is president of the National Education Association.

“Our members see it as something that really does help students,” he said. “Everybody doesn’t learn at the same pace. But once you’ve got it, you’ve got it.”

Karen Cator, director of the Department of Education’s Office of Educational Technology, says Khan automated “something that is so recognizable in our view of education: I have to solve problems, and somebody has to tell me how to do that. . . . It has caught on like wildfire.”

Since Khan first posted math videos on YouTube to tutor his cousins in 2004, the former hedge fund analyst has expanded his video library to 2,400 lessons that include basic addition, advanced calculus, history and science. Users also can access exercises and track their progress.

Based in California’s Silicon Valley, the Khan Academy was established as a non-profit organization in 2008. Its lessons have been viewed by more than 60 million users, the website says, and are being translated into 10 languages. Khan estimates the website is being used in more than 1,000 classrooms nationwide, including in a pilot math program in two fifth- and seventh-grade classes in Los Altos, Calif., public schools last year. The district plans to expand the pilot program to all fifth- and sixth-grade classes this fall.

Khan, who quit his job in finance in 2009 to serve as the academy’s executive director, views the academy as a stand-alone virtual classroom. “That’s what our mission is: a world-class education for everyone that’s free,” he said.

There’s no doubt that the Khan Academy’s videos, narrated enthusiastically by Khan himself, have struck a chord among students and educators as well as the independent learners who make up the majority of the site’s visitors. Users only hear Khan’s voice; he never appears on screen, and he uses neon colors to write on a computer blackboard.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates is a fan; the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation made a $1.5 million donation to the academy in 2010. Google awarded the academy $2 million that year for winning a crowd-sourced contest offering money to organizations with world-changing ideas.

The Khan Academy joins a crowded field of free and for-profit online learning programs, which some tout as the future of education and as options for cash-strapped school districts looking to cut staff.

But educators caution that what Khan offers is just another tool – albeit an effective one – that teachers can use to engage students. The Khan Academy and other online learning sites are no substitute for classroom teachers, they say.

“Technology is not going to replace teachers, but it empowers them to be much more effective with students,” Cator said. “There is an unbelievable opportunity that we have to leverage how people learn through technology.”

Khan acknowledges that his website is not a new idea. “We’re not the first people to put video online,” he said. “What’s different is we started off as a grass-roots, bottom-up thing, reaching students before we started going into the classroom.”

But educators say one of the problems with online learningis that even sites as sophisticated as the Khan Academy can’t be relied upon to expose everything a student hasn’t learned.

Good teachers listen to students and understand their prior experience to discover where they lack understanding, says Heidi Glidden, assistant director in the education issues department of the American Federation of Teachers.

“To suggest that all kids are able to learn using only one medium wasn’t realistic years ago, and we don’t function that way today,” Glidden said.

Even though the students can earn “badges” as they master Khan Academy exercises, a computer program is no substitute for the motivation that teachers provide, educators say. “A teacher motivates youngsters to aspire to go beyond where they’d go if left alone to their own devices,” said Daniel Domenech, executive director of the American Association of School Administrators.

Still, educators are embracing the technology because it opens doors to new resources and learning techniques.

Whereas teachers and students used to rely on books for information, they can now access an infinite world of information with the click of a mouse.

But that world requires vetting. As the Khan Academy ventures beyond basic math and science lessons, and deeper into subjective material such as U.S. history, users will need to navigate lessons with a more critical eye, educators say.

The need to monitor online learning is one example of how technology is changing the teacher’s role.

No longer mainly lecturers, teachers are becoming directors of learning who guide students, educators say. “The teacher is not the only one imparting knowledge. The teacher becomes much more of a facilitator of learning,” the NEA’s Van Roekel said.

Khan says he’s had to deal with the misconceptions that using the Khan Academy reduces the need for teachers or that class sizes can increase.

Instead, he believes that using the website adds value to the role of a teacher, who becomes a mentor or coach.

“A mentor is much higher up the value chain than a lecturer,” he said. “Someone who designs projects and experiments is higher up the value chain.”

The concept of flipping the classroom is key to the mentoring role: If students are learning the basics through watching videos, then teachers can spend class time on more creative projects instead of practice drills and homework assignments.

Students can work problems at their own pace until they get them right, while the assessment tool tracks progress for teachers, identifying when students need help and how long it takes them to grasp a concept.

“Every teacher will tell you, ‘I wish I had more time with students,’ ” Khan says.
