A few weeks ago, I decided to plunk down my hard-earned $97 for my first-ever online course on making profits from Google AdSense. For those who are serious about earning online, membership in Google's AdSense program is like the Holy Grail. In my experience, one can earn on the side from text links advertorials and direct ads on one's blog. But AdSense is so far the most consistent in bringing the money and giving one residual income.
However, as I said before, there are lots of misconceptions about the program. It's not just a matter of copying and pasting the code then expect that the dollars will come. It is really all about writing good content, gaining considerable blog traffic and placing the ads properly so that it gets the most returns.
I figure that I could read all about earning money online through free e-books on the internet and even from Google itself. But I wanted to hear it from insiders and get first-hand mentoring from the course proponent. There are also questions and answers from my course "classmates" that I wouldn't have thought otherwise. Here are the salient points that I've learned so far:
Keyword research is important. While it's true that you are free to write whatever moves you, bloggers serious about making money online look for terms that are most popular with people searching on Google and other engines.
Fortunately, there are guides like the Google Adwords Keyword Tool which can give one an idea on the most in-demand search terms. If you know what these terms are, you can optimize said keyword in your article title, permalink, meta tags and so on.
For example, you suddenly have an idea to write a post about Business Letter 101 which can help students and office workers go about how to write one. Using the Google Adwords Keyword Tool, you will find that people are indeed searching for the phrase "Business letters." However, this is not enough because other terms like "how to write a business letter" and "business letter format" are more popular. You then try to write a post targetting these popular keywords.
Search engine optimization is the process by which you optimize your site for better rankings. It can get quite technical but for platforms like WordPress, one would be happy to know that there are already basic SEO plugins one can easily upload to use in a blog. There are a number of ways by which one can optimize a site for the searches: on-page, on-site and off-site.
The title of your post, for instance, should not only be interesting to readers. They should already contain your keywords and describe, in a few letters, what the page is all about. For easy website analysis (and to see if am doing things right), I use free tools like the ones found in seocentro.com where I can get instant assessment on my web page loading time and a meta tags analysis.
There are other things am learning from the online course like the ABCs of website promotion and how to position your blog ads effectively to get maximum click-through rate. I will discuss them some other time.
